How to remove cat pee from a couch (stain and smell)

To remove cat pee from a couch, blot it from the outside in, flush the spot with cold water and pull the water back out, then soak the fabric and the foam beneath it with an enzymatic pet-urine cleaner and let it air-dry. Cat urine smells uniquely strong because a sulfur compound forms as it breaks down, and it keeps coming back unless the residue in the cushion is digested. Skip steam, heat, ammonia and vinegar.

Best method
Cold-water flush, enzymatic cleaner deep into the cushion, air-dry
Time
30 to 45 minutes of work, then air-drying until completely dry
Difficulty

You will need

  • Paper towels
  • Cold water and a spray bottle
  • Wet-dry vac or handheld upholstery cleaner
  • Enzymatic pet-urine cleaner, not past its date
  • A plastic syringe, for reaching into foam
  • A black light

How to remove cat urine from a couch

  1. 1

Find every spot with a black light

Darken the room and scan the seat, cushions, back, arms and the sides of the couch with a black light. Mark each glowing area with chalk or a sticky note. Check the floor around the base too.

Why: Urine contains fluorescent compounds, so old spots glow. Cats that spray mark vertical surfaces, so the back and sides of a couch are often hit as well as the seat.

  2. 2

    Blot from the outside in

On a fresh accident, press paper towels onto the spot, starting at the outer edge and moving inward, and replace them until they come up barely damp. Throw away any cloth towels you used rather than reusing them.

Why: Working inward keeps the urine from spreading, and every bit you lift now is less that reaches the foam.

  3. 3

    Check the cleaning code

Find the tag under the cushions. The water-based steps below suit W and W/S fabric. For S (solvent only) or X (vacuum only), call a professional who uses enzymatic cleaners. Test your enzyme cleaner on a hidden spot either way.

Why: Enzyme cleaners are water-based. Water on S- or X-coded fabric can leave rings, shrink it or bleed dye.

  4. 4

Flush with cold water and extract

Spray the spot with cold water and pull it back out with a wet-dry vac or handheld upholstery cleaner, or by pressing towels on it. For dried urine, rehydrate and extract several times.

Why: Dried urine has to be dissolved again before it can be removed. Cold water dilutes it without heat-setting anything.

  5. 5

Get enzymatic cleaner into the cushion

Apply the enzymatic cleaner to the fabric generously, then unzip the cushion if you can and treat the foam directly. A plastic syringe pushes cleaner deep into foam where the urine went. Don't rinse it off; follow the label's contact time.

Why: The smell lives in the residue inside the foam. Enzymes have to touch it to break it down, and they need time and moisture to work.

  6. 6

    Air-dry, then recheck

Let it air-dry with a fan, out of sun and with no hair dryer or heat. Keep the cat away until it's completely dry, then sniff and scan with the black light again. Repeat the enzyme treatment on anything that still smells or glows.

Why: Heat can bake urine into the material. Some smell is normal until it's dry, and cat urine odor tends to get stronger over time if residue remains, so a recheck matters.

Why cat pee smells so much stronger than other urine

Cat urine contains felinine, an amino acid made only by cats. Felinine has no smell itself, but it breaks down into a volatile sulfur compound (a thiol, the same chemical family as skunk spray) with a strong, catty odor. Intact male cats make far more felinine than neutered males or females, which is why tomcat spray is the worst. On top of that, bacteria turn urea into ammonia, giving the sharp stale-urine smell, and uric acid salts that barely dissolve in water stay behind in the fibers.

The Carpet and Rug Institute notes that cat urine odor tends to grow stronger with time and comes back in humid weather. Masking sprays leave the residue in place, so the smell returns. Cats also smell traces people can't, and that lingering scent draws them back to the same spot. For more on pet odors in upholstery, see pet smell on a couch.

Why the cushion is the real problem

Upholstery fabric is thin. Cat urine passes straight through it into foam and batting, which can't be rinsed like clothing and dries slowly. Treating only the surface leaves the source underneath, so the couch smells clean for a day and then the odor returns.

The Edmonton Humane Society's guide is specific: remove cushions and covers to reach every affected layer, use a syringe to push water deeper into cushions to flush the urine out, and, if you hire a cleaner, make sure they remove the couch covers, use enzymatic cleaners and avoid heat. Upholstery guides also warn against machine-washing or dry-cleaning zippered covers separately, because they can shrink or change color, so treat the covers by hand unless their label says they're washable. See how to clean a couch for cleaning codes.

By situation

Fresh cat pee on the couch

Blot right away, flush with cold water, extract, and apply the enzyme cleaner the same day. Fresh urine is far easier to remove than old urine, because bacteria haven't broken it down into the strong-smelling compounds yet.

Old cat pee smell that keeps coming back

Find the full extent with a black light, rehydrate the spot several times, extract, and inject enzymatic cleaner into the foam. Expect two or more rounds. If you already tried other cleaners, clean once with an oxidizing pet cleaner first, since residue from earlier products weakens enzymes.

Cat sprayed the back or side of the couch

Spray runs down the fabric into the frame and the cushion below. Treat the whole drip path, not just the spot at cat height, and check the floor and baseboard behind the couch. Discolored wood finish on the frame or legs may need refinishing.

The smell won't go away no matter what

The Edmonton Humane Society says the only way to be completely sure a urine-soaked item no longer smells is to replace it. On a couch that can mean replacing the cushion foam rather than the whole piece. That isn't always practical, but it's worth considering for cushions soaked repeatedly.

Leather couch

Fabric cleaning codes don't apply to leather, and saturating it with cleaner can damage it. Wipe urine up at once and follow the leather maker's care guidance or use a leather specialist who works with enzymatic products.

Your cat keeps peeing on the couch

A cat that suddenly starts urinating outside the litter box may have a urinary problem or stress-related cystitis, so see a vet before treating it as behavior. Neutering reduces marking. After cleaning, cover the couch with a waterproof cover or a washable vinyl, flannel-backed tablecloth until the habit breaks.

What not to do

  • Don't steam-clean or use hot water. Heat can set the odor and stain by bonding proteins into synthetic fibers, and steam can push urine deeper into the cushion.
  • Don't use ammonia, bleach or vinegar cleaners on the spot. Humane society guides say they can leave a residue that smells like urine to a cat and encourage it to mark the spot again.
  • Don't mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar. Bleach plus ammonia releases chloramine gas and bleach plus vinegar releases chlorine gas. See never mix these cleaners.
  • Don't rely on fragrance sprays. They leave the urine residue in place, and the odor returns, especially in humid weather.
  • Don't use an old bottle of enzyme cleaner. The Edmonton Humane Society notes that enzymatic cleaners can lose potency over time.

Other methods that work

Oxidizing pet cleaner

Use it first if the spot was already treated with another cleaner or a steamer. It breaks up the old residue so the enzymatic cleaner can work on the urine afterward.

Caution: Spot-test for color change, follow the label, and never combine it with other chemicals.

Baking soda

Sprinkled on a dry cushion and vacuumed up, it's a common home deodorizer. It's a traditional method with weak evidence for cat urine and doesn't break down the residue.

Caution: Only on a fully dry spot. Vacuum it all out.

Professional upholstery cleaning

Worth it for S- and X-coded fabric, repeated spraying and soaked cushions. Ask the cleaner to remove the covers, use an enzymatic product and avoid heat-based methods.

Stain still there?

It smelled fine, then the smell came back days later

Residue in the foam is releasing odor as humidity changes. Re-treat the foam directly, using a syringe if needed, and let it dry completely before judging.

The enzyme cleaner seems to do nothing

Earlier cleaners may be blocking it, the bottle may be old, or it isn't reaching the urine. Clean with an oxidizing pet cleaner, use a fresh enzymatic product, and apply it into the cushion.

A yellow ring stays on the fabric

Urine or the fabric finish wicked to the edge of the damp area. On W or W/S fabric, mist lightly with cold water, blot from the outside in and dry fast with a fan.

Safety

  • Wear gloves and wash your hands after handling cat urine.
  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar.
  • Spot-test enzymatic and oxidizing cleaners on a hidden area first.

Never mix cleaning products; see chemicals you must never combine.

Questions

How do you get cat pee smell out of a couch?

Remove the urine residue rather than covering it: flush with cold water, extract, then soak the fabric and the foam with an enzymatic cleaner and let it air-dry. Recheck with a black light once it's dry.

Why does cat pee smell worse than dog pee?

Cat urine contains felinine, which breaks down into a strong-smelling sulfur compound. Intact males produce the most.

Does vinegar get rid of cat urine smell on a couch?

Humane society guides advise against it. Vinegar doesn't remove the odor from a cat's point of view and can encourage the cat to mark again. Use an enzymatic cleaner.

How do I get cat pee smell out of couch cushions?

Unzip the cushion and treat the foam directly, using a syringe to push cold water and then enzymatic cleaner deep inside. Let it dry fully, and consider replacing foam that's been soaked repeatedly.

Will the cat pee smell ever go away?

Usually, once all the residue is digested and the cushion is dry, though old or repeated spraying may need several rounds. If it persists, replacing the cushion foam is the sure fix.
