How to get pee out of a mattress (stain and smell)
For a pee stain on a mattress, blot up all you can, sponge the spot with cool water and then a mild detergent solution, pull the moisture back out, and apply an enzyme cleaner without soaking. Once it's completely dry, sprinkle baking soda over the area overnight and vacuum it up to absorb any leftover smell. The stain and the smell come from the same residue: bacteria turn urea in urine into ammonia, so the smell only goes once the residue is out.

How to remove urine from a mattress
- 1
Strip the bed and blot hard
Pull off the sheets and protector to wash separately. Press a thick stack of dry towels onto the wet area with your full weight, swapping to dry towels until no more moisture comes up.
Why: Every bit of urine you pull up now is residue that won't sit in the foam or batting feeding odor-forming bacteria.
- 2
Sponge with cool water, then a detergent solution
Dampen a cloth with cool water and sponge the spot, then sponge it with a mild solution of liquid detergent and cool water. Blot after each pass. Keep it damp, not wet.
Why: Cool water dissolves urine without setting its protein, and detergent lifts the residue. A damp cloth reaches the stain without pushing liquid deeper.
- 3
Extract the moisture
Use a wet/dry vacuum over the spot if you have one. If not, press dry towels on it again, standing on them if needed, until they come up nearly dry.
Why: Whatever liquid stays inside carries urine residue with it. Pulling it back out is the only way to remove what's below the surface.
- 4
Apply an enzyme cleaner without soaking
Test an enzyme cleaner on a hidden corner of the cover, then apply it to the stain following the label's contact time. Use enough to reach the stained layer, not enough to saturate the mattress. Blot off the excess afterward.
Why: Enzymes break down the organic residue in urine. That residue is what bacteria keep turning into ammonia, so removing it removes the source of the smell.
- 5
Dry it completely with air, not heat
Point a fan across the spot, open a window or run a dehumidifier, and leave the bed unmade until the surface and the layers underneath feel fully dry. Don't use a hair dryer, iron or steam.
Why: Heat sets urine stains and odor, and anything that stays damp more than 24 to 48 hours is at risk of mold.
- 6
Baking soda overnight for leftover smell
When the mattress is dry, sprinkle baking soda over the area, leave it overnight, then vacuum it up thoroughly. Smell the spot up close; if urine odor is still there, repeat the enzyme step.
Why: Texas A&M Extension recommends baking soda only after cleaning, to absorb residual odor. If the smell is strong, residue is still inside and needs another round.
Why urine smells worse the longer it sits
Fresh urine from a healthy person has only a mild odor. The sharp, stale smell develops afterward, as bacteria use an enzyme called urease to break urea down into ammonia. Urea is more than half of the solids in urine, so there's plenty to work with. Urine also contains uric acid and its salts, which dissolve poorly in water and linger in fibers and padding.
That's why air fresheners don't work: fragrance sits on top while bacteria keep producing ammonia from the residue underneath. The fix is the same for the stain and the smell. Get the urine out, break down what's left with enzymes, and dry the mattress fully.
Why a mattress needs a different method
A mattress can't be rinsed or soaked. Liquid passes through the thin cover into foam or batting, spreads sideways and down, and stays. Mattress makers say foam should never be soaked or washed, and foam holds moisture and dries slowly. So instead of the soak-and-wash that works on bedding (see the urine stain overview), the mattress method is: use as little liquid as possible, pull back out what you put in, and dry with air.
By situation
Dried urine stain on a mattress
Dried residue has to be redissolved before it can be removed. Dampen the spot with cool water a few times, letting it soak in briefly each time, then extract with a wet/dry vacuum and follow with the enzyme cleaner. Old stains often need two or three rounds, and a deep saturation may never fully clear.
Urine smell stuck in the mattress
If the stain is gone but the smell isn't, urine has reached layers below the surface. Repeat the rehydrate, extract and enzyme cycle, then the baking soda step once it's dry. Pet-care guides use this method for deep-soaked cushions and mattresses; the residue from human urine is chemically similar, though no human-specific guide covers it.
Memory foam and other foam mattresses
Foam holds moisture and dries slowly, so use an even lighter touch with water and cleaner, and give it longer with a fan. Follow the maker's care instructions; if the cover zips off, check its label before washing it. If urine soaked deep into the foam, replacing the mattress may be the only sure fix.
Bedwetting and repeat accidents
Treat each accident as soon as you can, and use a waterproof mattress protector so most of the urine never reaches the mattress. Wash the protector and bedding in cool water with detergent, add an enzyme soak if needed, and check them before using the dryer.
Yellow mark left after the smell is gone
On white ticking, a small, tested dab of 3% hydrogen peroxide may lighten the mark. Use it only after you've finished with the enzyme cleaner, because peroxide interferes with enzymes, and expect it to lighten colored fabric.
What not to do
- Don't soak or pour liquid on the mattress. Liquid that reaches the core is hard to extract and can lead to mold if it isn't dry within 24 to 48 hours.
- Don't use hot water, steam or a hair dryer. Heat sets urine stains and odor in the fibers.
- Don't mask the smell with air freshener. Bacteria keep turning the residue into ammonia underneath, so the odor returns.
- Don't use chlorine bleach. It damages polyurethane foam, and with ammonia or vinegar it releases toxic gas. Never mix them.
Other methods that work
Half-and-half vinegar rinse
Texas A&M Extension's method for items that can't go in a washer is to sponge with cool water, then a detergent solution, then rinse by sponging with half white vinegar and half water, and let it air-dry. The vinegar rinse removes detergent residue.
Caution: Test on colored ticking first, keep it damp rather than wet, and never use it with bleach.
Calcium carbonate instead of baking soda
Texas A&M lists calcium carbonate as an alternative to baking soda for absorbing leftover urine odor on a dry mattress. Sprinkle, leave overnight, vacuum.
Caution: Like baking soda, it only absorbs odor. It doesn't remove residue.
3% hydrogen peroxide
Sometimes dabbed on as a mild bleach for a leftover yellow mark. It's traditional, with weak evidence for mattresses.
Caution: It can lighten colored fabric, and it interferes with enzyme cleaners, so don't use the two together.
Stain still there?
The smell came back once the mattress dried
Residue is still deep in the padding. Repeat the rehydrate, extract and enzyme cycle. If it keeps returning after several rounds, the urine has reached layers you can't clean from the surface.
A water ring formed around the spot
Liquid spread sideways and dried at the edge. Dampen the whole ring lightly with a cloth, blot from the outside in, and dry it with a fan.
The mattress smells musty days later
It didn't dry fully. Keep a fan and dehumidifier on it. A persistent musty smell or visible mold means the mattress may need replacing.
Safety
- Wear gloves and wash your hands after cleaning up urine.
- Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia or vinegar, and rinse between products.
- A strong or unusual urine odor can be a sign of dehydration, diet or a medical issue such as a urinary tract infection. Persistent changes are worth asking a doctor about.
Never mix cleaning products; see chemicals you must never combine.
Questions
What's the best way to clean pee out of a mattress?
Blot thoroughly, sponge with cool water and a mild detergent solution, extract the moisture, apply an enzyme cleaner without soaking, and dry the mattress fully with a fan. Finish with baking soda overnight for any leftover smell.
How do you get urine out of a mattress when it's dry?
Rehydrate the spot with cool water a few times, extract it with a wet/dry vacuum or towels, then use an enzyme cleaner. Old or deep stains may take several rounds.
Will the urine smell in a mattress go away on its own?
Usually not. Bacteria keep turning the residue into ammonia, so the smell lasts until the urine is cleaned out. Enzyme cleaning and full drying are what make it go.
How do you get pee smell out of a mattress?
Clean out the residue first with cool water, detergent and an enzyme cleaner, then let it dry. Baking soda or calcium carbonate left overnight on the dry mattress absorbs what's left.
Can you get urine smell out of a foam mattress?
Often, if you act quickly and use very little liquid. Foam holds moisture, so dry it thoroughly. If urine soaked deep into the foam, replacement may be the only sure fix.
