How to get putty out of carpet

To get putty out of carpet, chill it with ice until it's hard, scrape and pick out as much as you can, then blot the leftover film with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover on a cotton ball. Finish with a weak dish-detergent solution and a plain-water rinse. Silicone putty slowly flows down between carpet yarns, so you remove it cold, while it's rigid, and dissolve what's left without soaking the backing.

Best method
Ice, scrape, blot with alcohol or nail polish remover, rinse
Time
20 to 45 minutes
Difficulty
Moderate

You will need

  • Ice cubes in a plastic bag
  • A dull knife or metal spoon
  • Rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover, and cotton balls
  • Clear liquid dish detergent
  • White cloths and a spray bottle of water

How to remove putty from carpet

  1. 1

    Freeze the putty

Hold a bag of ice cubes on the putty for several minutes until it's hard all the way through. Don't pull at it while it's warm.

Why: Cold putty behaves like a solid and breaks off in pieces. Warm putty stretches, tears and leaves thin strands wrapped around the yarns.

  2. 2

    Scrape and pick it out

Lift the hardened putty with a dull knife or the edge of a metal spoon, working from the edges toward the center and pulling up, not across. Re-chill whenever it softens. Vacuum the small crumbs.

Why: Mechanical removal takes out the bulk without spreading it. Working inward keeps the stain from getting larger.

  3. 3

    Test your solvent

Dab a little rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover on a hidden spot of carpet, such as inside a closet, and blot with a white cloth. If color comes off or the fibers change, use the other one or skip to the detergent step.

Why: Solvents can affect some carpet dyes. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends non-acetone remover on carpet, because acetone is a strong solvent.

  4. 4

Blot the film with a cotton ball

Saturate a cotton ball with nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol and blot the stained area, switching to a fresh cotton ball as color transfers. Repeat as needed. Never pour solvent onto the carpet.

Why: This is Crayola's method for its putty on carpet. The solvent releases the oily, colored silicone film. Pouring would let it reach the latex that holds the carpet's backing together.

  5. 5

    Clean with dilute dish detergent

Mix ¼ teaspoon of clear dish soap in 1 cup of lukewarm water. Blot it onto the area with a white cloth, let it sit a few minutes and blot again.

Why: Putty contains oily ingredients. Dish soap lifts the remaining greasy film and the solvent residue.

  6. 6

    Rinse and dry

Mist the area with plain lukewarm water and blot, two or three times. Then press dry towels on it, let it dry fully and brush the pile with your fingers.

Why: Detergent left in carpet turns sticky and attracts dirt, so the spot would darken again within weeks.

Why putty is so hard to get out of carpet

Toy putty is a silicone polymer (dimethylsiloxane cross-linked with boric acid) with silica filler, a castor-oil ingredient and color. It tears like a solid when you pull fast, but over minutes and hours it flows like a very thick liquid. Dropped on carpet, it slowly sinks down the yarns toward the backing and wraps around them.

That creates two problems: the putty lodged deep in the pile, and the oily, colored film it leaves on every yarn it touched. Cold fixes the first, by making the putty rigid enough to snap off. A solvent and then detergent handle the second. It sits with the adhesive and polymer stains, though unlike glue it never cures on its own.

Carpet rules that matter for putty

The Carpet and Rug Institute's sequence for putty is dry-cleaning solvent on a cloth first, then the dilute dish-detergent solution, then a warm-water rinse, and finally a professional. Whichever solvent you use, apply it to the cotton ball or cloth and blot, working from the edges to the center. Don't scrub: it frays the yarn tips and leaves a fuzzy patch even after the putty is gone. For general carpet care, see how to clean carpet.

By situation

Putty pressed deep into the carpet

Freeze it longer so the putty is rigid all the way down, then work it out in small pieces. It can take several rounds of chilling and picking. Afterward, use the solvent and detergent on the film.

Putty that's been there for days

Putty doesn't dry out the way glue or dough does, so old putty is treated the same as fresh. It has usually flowed deeper, though, and left more film, so expect more blotting.

Shag or thick-pile carpet

Long yarns give putty more to wrap around. Chill, then separate the yarns with your fingers and pick the putty off each one, rather than scraping across the top, which flattens it in.

A colored stain remains

Colored putty can leave a tint after the film is gone. Repeat the solvent blotting with fresh cotton balls. If the tint stays, a professional carpet cleaner is the last step in the Carpet and Rug Institute's sequence.

Wool carpet or a rug

Wool is a protein fiber and more sensitive than synthetic carpet. Chill and pick out the putty, test any solvent with extra care, use only the mild detergent solution, and call a professional rug cleaner for anything that stays.

What not to do

  • Don't pull or scrape warm putty. It stretches and spreads into a thin film that's harder to remove.
  • Don't pour solvent onto the carpet. Solvent that reaches the backing can damage the latex holding the layers together.
  • Don't scrub or use a stiff brush. It pushes putty deeper and frays the yarn tips.
  • Don't use heat, like an iron or hair dryer. Warm putty flows faster and spreads further into the pile.

Other methods that work

Dry-cleaning solvent

The Carpet and Rug Institute's first step for putty on carpet: apply it to a white cloth and blot until the film stops transferring.

Caution: Ventilate, keep away from flames and test on a hidden spot.

Petroleum-based lubricant spray

A popular tip because petroleum solvents loosen silicone putty. No stain guide recommends it, so it's a traditional method with weak evidence.

Caution: It leaves its own oily stain in carpet, which then needs the detergent and rinse steps. Flammable.

Stain still there?

The carpet looks greasy or darker where the putty was

Film or detergent residue is still there. Blot with the solvent once more, then the detergent solution, and rinse with plain water several times.

Tiny bits of putty are still stuck in the pile

Re-chill the area and pick them out between your fingers, then vacuum.

The solvent changed the carpet color

Stop using it. Rinse the area with plain water and blot. Color loss from a solvent is usually permanent, which is why the hidden-spot test matters; a carpet professional can advise on a repair.

Safety

  • Rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover and dry-cleaning solvents are flammable. Ventilate and keep them away from flames.
  • Keep putty and solvents out of reach of small children while you work.

Never mix cleaning products; see chemicals you must never combine.

Questions

How do you get silly putty out of carpet?

Freeze it with ice, scrape and pick out as much as possible, then blot the remaining film with nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. Finish with dilute dish detergent and a water rinse.

Does rubbing alcohol remove putty from carpet?

Yes, it's Crayola's suggested substitute for nail polish remover on carpet. Blot it on with a cotton ball after removing the bulk of the putty, and test it first.

Can you get thinking putty out of carpet?

Usually. Thinking putty is silicone putty too, so the same freeze, scrape and solvent method applies. Brightly colored putty may take more rounds of blotting.
